How do I get in?
You will need qualifications to get into advertising; at least five GCSEs including maths and English. Competition is fierce and most advertising agencies increasingly expect A-levels and a degree for account managers. Creative roles require an artistic BTEC, HND or degree. Market researchers and analysts need to be numerate; relevant degrees include maths and economics.
What job could I do?
Account Manager - this role involves looking after particular clients' accounts. The account manager is responsible for finding out exactly what the client wants. The client produces a brief and the account managers ensures that the other departments understand this fully so they can create an effective campaign
Copywriter - copywriters write the text that comprises the campaign be it in print, on radio or television. They also create catchy slogans and jingles intended to stick in the public's mind and re inforce the client's brand
Art Director - the art director is responsible for turning an idea or concept into a visual image. The normal method is to produce 'storyboards' - these are like cartoon strips and enable others to see how the advert unfolds
Graphic Designer - this role is an artistic one. Graphic designers will be responsible for producing the images in the storyboards or single advert. This can be done using computer graphics or drawn by hand
Agency Producer - an agency producer is responsible for making TV or cinema ads. They would outsource this role to a film production company specialising in advertisements
Support staff - possible suppot roles include market researchers, secretaries, accountants and office managers.
