How do I get in?

There are many different roles within childcare and the qualifications required vary depending on the job. To be a child psychologist or psychotherapist you will need postgraduate academic qualifications; to train as a teacher you will need to do either a BEd (teaching degree) or a PGCE following a relevant degree; to work as a childminder you do not need any formal qualifications but you could train for a CCP - the Level 3 Certificate in Childminding Practice. Most jobs require some good GCSE passes or equivalent.

What job could I do?

Child psychotherapist - child psychotherapists work with children who have emotional or behavioural problems. They see the children on an individual basis and help them to understand and overcome their problems
Teacher - teachers train to work with a certain age group, either in nursery, primary or secondary schools or in colleges. Teachers plan lessons, teach classes and set homework and tests. In addition to the teaching there is a lot of admin

Nurse - children's nurses are qualified nurses who have specialised in the nursing of children. They work in children's wards of general hospital, specialist children's hospitals and community-based clinics

Playworker - a playworker normally works with children of 5-15 years old, usually outside school hours in breakfast clubs, after-school clubs, play centres and holiday playschemes. Playwork involves using play to help children develop on all levels

Childminder - childminders work in their own homes looking after young children whose parents are at work. They must be registered with the local social services department. Childminders look after the children all day and help them to develop and learn.

Careers in Sunderland Earning potential?

Earnings vary depending on the job and the career level. A starting salary for a teacher is around £17,000 rising to around £35,000 with experience and seniority. A childminder is normally paid a certain rate per child - a salary normally agreed with the parent - this can be from £60 to £120 per week depending on the region and the hours worked.
