How do I get in?

The qualifications required vary depending on the financial sector that you want to work in. To work as a clerk in a clearing bank (retail) you will need GCSEs or to start as a more senior clerk you should have two or more A-levels.

There are also graduate recruitment schemes that train you directly for management. The Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB) offers qualifications ranging from certificates to diplomas in various areas of finance. Getting into work in building societies is similar to retail banking.

Most recruits to insurance have at least four GCSEs; maths and English are essential. Graduates from a range of disciplines also work in insurance; degrees in business, accounting, law and maths are the most sought-after by insurance companies.

To become an accountant involves taking professional exams. Most people in investment banking have very good degrees or postgraduate qualifications; the investment banks recruit top graduates only.
