How do I get in?

Strictly speaking it is not necessary to have any paper qualifications to become a hairdresser, certainly not to get your first salon job. However to be a competent hairdresser you really need an NVQ or SVQ Hairdressing Level 2. Many salons incorporate external study into the training for new hairdressers. Most salon owners do expect job applicants to have some GCSEs orScottish Standard passes. Useful subjects are English, maths, art and science.

What job could I do?

Artistic Director- this role could involve working for a large chain of salons, overseeing the work of all the salons and ensuring that they conform to the company's methods and image

Owner/Manager- this role involves responsibility for the running of all aspects of an individual salon or a chain of salons. This could include recruiting and training staff, developing business, managing accounts, purchasing and fitting salons and choosing which products to use

Senior Stylist- the senior stylists have their own clients and are responsible for training junior staff

Stylist- the stylist cuts and styles hair - and sometimes wigs - for male and female clients. They use a variety of techniques: setting with rollers, colouring, tinting, perming etc

Trainee Stylist- the trainee will do most of the shampooing and provision of refreshments for clients. They are also generally responsible for cleaning the salon. They will closely watch and assist the stylist in order to learn hairdressing techniques.

Pros and Cons?
